The reward of surprise

More than that one huge plot twist (almost) no one saw coming, surprises keep us engaged, turning pages, and invested. And here's another bonus: they reward the reader. 🎁

Page-turning books ☂️ a number of subplots, character desires and goals, and complex relationships under the main plot. In each of these, there's room for twists or surprises. As a reader, I love them. They allow those gorgeous waves of build up and anticipation leading to mini resolutions, twists, "I didn't see that coming" moments, and character development. Engaging!

Does a character act... well, out of character? If done well and believable, such surprises deepen that character and the reader's connection to them. If you are a writer, look for ways to incorporate these in later scenes after establishing the norms of your character's behavior, speech and reactions.

🥨 CAUTION: Don't force a twist. All you'll get is a soggy pretzel, and no one wants that. Surprises can't come out of nowhere. We don't want readers shaking their heads at "that'd never happen" moments. Be creative, but be realistic.

🥡 My take away

Regard writing advice as just that, advice. Don't follow rigid rules or think you need to follow everything these editors and authors tell you. Every author is unique and your "voice" and style are what make your book a story that could only be written by you.

HUGE update on THE 12TH CLEANSING

🤩 I'm blown away by the response to my first (but not last) crime thriller. 4.3/5 on Amazon and Goodreads and a Gold Book Award!

⚠️ WIPs

I've gotten some excellent beta reader feedback on book one of my space opera and am in the last two chapters of book two. It will be a trilogy with potential to carry on the series from there...

Meantime, I have an outline for a crime thriller series. And that's all you'll get on that one until a future update. 🤫

Lastly (for now) I've shelved my alternate history novel. The third(ish) draft is done and it needs some revision before I seek beta reader feedback. I find walking away for while and coming back gives me fresh perspective and allows me to greatly improve the revision and self-editing process.

🤮 How to suck without knowing it 🙋🏻♂️ What I’m up to ✍🏼 Author resources Just write Yep, that’s the advice so many "experts" give us authors. They say it’s the best way to improve. Is it? 🧑🍳 If you suck at cooking and just keep cooking, you’ll likely improve a little. Trial & error can be a decent teacher. 🤔 But would you open a restaurant if you’re the only one who ever tasted your food and you consider it good? I think it’s true that writers improve by writing, but only so much. If no one...

Ciao! It's me.

Look, I totally get it—you’re only here 'cause you grabbed a free story. I really hope you had a blast reading it. And hey, maybe you even stumbled upon one of the other freebies I sent your way through this newsletter. Awesome. 👍🏼 Fun Fact: In Italian, "Ciao!" means "Hi" and "Bye." But the last thing you needed was another useless email cluttering your Inbox. Heck, you may have a filter or rule shoving me into oblivion, making this note moot. C’est la vie. (Did you say "la vie"? 😉) So feel...

📝 A note from this author 🫣 “Me” in my characters & stories 😘 Darkened Cloud launch price goes bye bye 🔓 A Personal Note: I don’t often share my personal losses and experiences. One October gave me the most unimaginable of these when my sons (12 & 13 at the time) and I lost the most amazing & loving wife and mother. We carried on and I’m proud of the men my sons have become. The thing about personal experiences, even the tragic ones, as a writer is how they shape my characters and stories....
