Milan Noir

On the south side of the city lies a subset of Milan’s nightlife, drawing tourists and locals alike. It’s the prefect setting for a crime. They call it The Navigli. (Unless you’re Italian, your mind’s not pronouncing it right. 😉)

The official description: “The navigli are a system of interconnected canals dating back as far as the Middle Ages.” Although landlocked, some say ancient Milan resembled Venice. These canals are now paved roads with subway lines (called the Metro 🚇) running under them.

My unofficial description: “Tons of eateries along old (often foul-smelling) canals where people flock for cheap meals.” Besides thick fog, Milan is famous for its aperitivo. Along The Navigli, and a few other nightlife hotspots, they call it apericena - “cena” meaning dinner. For around 12-14 euros you get a cocktail that “comes with” a dinner buffet. But be patient, you’ll need to make several trips filling the tiny plates they provide.

While walking down a side alley to find “the world’s smallest gin distillery,” (Google that🍸) I stumbled upon an ancient laundromat. With just enough eerie in its vibe under the cover of night, and off the main walk teaming with famished to over-stuffed inebriated folk, I imagined the scene. Someone looking to cap off their belly full of cocktails with a smooth gin stumbles (literally) upon something out of place. They squint. A bloodied hand reaches out from under a stretch of torn fabric.

Let the investigation begin. (After some wretched screaming, that is)

"Firefly meets Dune" (???)

I chose the audiobook and enjoyed it despite its flaws. Ten gets into and out of "impossible" situations rather often.

The character of Ten Low is well-developed, with backstory slowly weaved into the narrative. The existence of "Them" adds an enigmatic element to the backwater moon setting. "Firefly meets Dune" may be a grandiose tagline, but it kinda fits if you're not expecting the witty humor of Firefly and political intrigue of Dune.

If you enjoy audiobooks and this is included in your sub, I say go for it.

We love 'em, don't we? Some books (TV/Films too) feel like they're missing something without the ones we've come to expect from a certain genre.

🤮 How to suck without knowing it 🙋🏻♂️ What I’m up to ✍🏼 Author resources Just write Yep, that’s the advice so many "experts" give us authors. They say it’s the best way to improve. Is it? 🧑🍳 If you suck at cooking and just keep cooking, you’ll likely improve a little. Trial & error can be a decent teacher. 🤔 But would you open a restaurant if you’re the only one who ever tasted your food and you consider it good? I think it’s true that writers improve by writing, but only so much. If no one...
