๐ A Personal Note:
I donโt often share my personal losses and experiences. One October gave me the most unimaginable of these when my sons (12 & 13 at the time) and I lost the most amazing & loving wife and mother.
We carried on and Iโm proud of the men my sons have become. The thing about personal experiences, even the tragic ones, as a writer is how they shape my characters and stories. This is most notable in OVERLAP: THE LIVES OF A FORMER TIME JUMPER.
Marcus is so distraught by the loss of his wife, he invents time travel in an effort to save her. His inability to move on becomes an obsession, and at the end of his life he ponders if trying to avoid his grief had only compounded it.
Then in FINDING IDYLLIUM I wrote Kateryna as a widow. And Saul is plagued by seeing his former wife happily married to another man. He carries that and other deep losses with him to Idyllium where we see him wrestle his grief into rage and vengeance.
In TO GAZE UPON A DARKENED CLOUD, Jonah canโt accept loosing his wife to the storm. Grasping an irrational faith he doesnโt even believe, he embarks on a desperate quest to find her. And in my forthcoming crime thriller, THE 12TH CLEANSING, Detective Walker Michaels is a widower who becomes overly attached to the family of the latest victim, themselves coping with their horrific loss.
So, yeah, I guess you can say I put a bit of myself into my writing. Not only is it cathartic for me, my readers tell me they feel the depth of my characters, relate to their emotions and reactions, and appreciate their growth. Beyond the accolades, awards, & reviews, this is the mark of success I seek as an author.
