Huge news for Kindle App users on Apple devices

Epic Games v. Apple Ruling Enables Kindle Book Purchases on iPhone and iPad

On April 30, 2025, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers issued a ruling in the Epic Games v. Apple case that fundamentally changed purchases on Apple devices. The court found Apple’s restrictions anti-competitive and ordered that:

  • Apple can no longer charge a 27% commission on purchases made outside the App Store.
  • Apple cannot prevent developers from guiding users to alternative payment methods, such as external websites.

While Apple is appealing the decision, it is currently complying with the order.

What Changed for Kindle Users

  • Amazon updated the Kindle app for iOS to include a prominent new “Get Book” button next to book listings.
  • Tapping this button now opens Amazon’s mobile web store in a browser, where users can complete their purchase. Once bought, the book is synced back to the Kindle app.
  • This process is much more streamlined and user-friendly, as it allows users to start the purchase flow within the app itself, rather than having to manually navigate to Amazon’s website.

Broader Impact

  • Other major apps, like Spotify, have also begun to take advantage of the new rules, offering external payment links and subscription options.
  • The ruling is seen as a significant step toward a more open digital marketplace on iOS, benefiting both consumers and developers.

It's always fun to see "English" used in Italy Indies Gotta Spend if Readers Gonna Read Many indie authors self-edit and stop there. I learned (the hard way) that to engage readers so they enjoy my stories, like all authors, I need a team of experts to polish and refine a manuscript into a novel. I invest in my craft to provide you with a great reading experience. That starts with self-editing but cannot end there. An author must add beta readers, professional (paid) editors and proofreaders,...
